Mastering Conversational Etiquette: Responses that Build Connection and Respect

1. When Asked if You’ve Eaten

Instead of a simple “yes” or “no,” use this opportunity to engage with a lighthearted invitation. Say:

  • “If you’re inviting, I’m ready for another meal.” This playful response turns a casual question into a moment to deepen the conversation and bond over a potential shared meal.

2. When Receiving Compliments

Rather than just saying “thank you,” elevate the conversation by complimenting the other person as well:

  • “You’re even better.” This approach not only acknowledges their compliment but also reflects appreciation and respect, creating a positive exchange where both parties feel uplifted.

When a customer mentions that your product is too expensive, avoid a defensive response. Instead, frame the value of your offering with respect to their preferences:

  • “Of course, quality comes at a price. With your status, I imagine you won’t go for cheap items. While I can’t offer a discount, I can guarantee the best quality and service.” This response acknowledges their concerns while subtly reinforcing the value of your product and affirming their status.
