The Origins of the Fire

In response to the disaster, Congress allocated more than $42 million to relocate residents. By the early 1990s, most people had left their homes, and by 2002, Centralia’s ZIP code was removed. Highway 61, which once ran through the town, was blocked off and covered with tons of dirt to prevent tourists from venturing into the dangerous area.
Today, Centralia stands as a ghost town, with the remnants of its former life slowly being reclaimed by nature. The fire continues to burn underground, and experts predict it will do so for at least another 250 years.
